"WHAT'S HAPPENED"
Summer as usual has flown by with another busy Track and Field season which saw many excellent individual and team performances.
The Devon County championships were held at the Brickfields track Plymouth with two days of good competition and our thanks go to the City of Plymouth A.C. for hosting and all the dedicated Devon County AA officials who gave their time to ensure a smooth running event.
Teams are selected based on the Championships and other meetings such as Devon and South West Schools to represent the County in the annual South West Inter Counties Track and Field meet held in August at the Exeter Arena.
Thanks to all the athletes selected this was a clean sweep for Devon winning the Female and Male Shields along with the combined. Our thanks go to our Team managers Derek Smith U13, U15 girls and boys, Amanda Evans U17 and Senior women and Richard Wallace U17 and Senior men.
The Devon Open series which is for all Devon club athletes and also open to club athletes from outside Devon again incorporated the Quad Kids multi event format for U11 and U10 and this was well supported and an important introduction to Track and Field for these age groups.
Last year we mentioned the achievement of Exeter Harriers in being the first team in Devon to enter the British Athletic League and after just one season we must congratulate Exeter on gaining promotion in to Division 3 and wish them luck for 2010.
Only one downside to the Track and Field season has been a lack of Officials leaving a heavy burden on those who do turn up and find themselves working throughout the meeting without a break. Clubs please try and recruit more people to take an Officials course so as we can make sure our athletes have the necessary competition enabling their progress in the sport.
